Win a Four Night Stay in Nauvoo, Illinois!

My daughter won a contest and the prize was to have the entire Woodruff Hotel in Nauvoo, Illinois, (so my daughter and forty other guests) for a five night stay. We were thrilled!

We gathered grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends and spent six days in Nauvoo at the beginning of June. We had so much fun! Nauvoo has so many historical sites to see, concerts, shows, plays, movies, yummy custard, gourmet chocolate, finding our ancestors and just being together. But the Woodruff Hotel really went out of their way to make our stay memorable. The views from the balconies in our rooms was spectacular. The suites were roomy and had every amenity we needed. Matt, the owner, even made us specialty family name posters for everyone in our group! If you ever have a chance to stay at the Woodruff Hotel, you should. From the owner to the staff to the rooms, every detail was taken care of.

But don't stop there!

They are currently running another contest so YOU could win a family suite that sleeps up to 12 people for a four night stay! You can click here to enter!

I can't even describe how awesome it was to experience it with so many family members. (We did miss the ones who couldn't make it, of course.) But staying across the street from the Nauvoo temple in the historic and beautiful Woodruff Hotel made it extra amazing. It was definitely a trip I will never forget. What are you waiting for? Go enter so you can experience it, too!

In the Non-Fiction Corner---Unshattered Review

In the Non-Fiction Corner With Lauren

Before we even get into the writing and content of the book, can I just mention how absolutely incredible this story is? I could not believe that Carol is not completely famous. I have never talked about a book with more people. I couldn’t wait to share with others what Carol had gone through and how she overcame the trials that had come her way. I have gained such a deep respect for this woman and it has helped me see that anything is possible. This is a story that needed to be shared.

Decker and Nash start the book by giving you a lead up to the events that changed Carol’s life forever. Her life sounded perfect with the man of her dreams and a growing family. Then everything completely changed when she went to give birth to her second child. I’ll let you read and find out what happens for yourself because, like me, you won’t be able to put down the book. One thing I loved was that you can hear Carol’s voice as she is telling the story. She is so real and talks about the raw emotions of going through this event. She doesn’t hold anything back and doesn’t try to sugar coat it. It was hard. She didn’t know if she could do it. The authors did a perfect job of captivating the reader and making them feel something for the story.

This is a beautiful book that I will always be grateful that I read. I will never forget the story of Carol and that it taught me anyone can do anything. No matter what you are going through, there is always a silver lining and there is always good to find. Thank you Carol Decker for being willing to share your story with the world, because it is one of hope that we all need to hear.

Here's the back copy:

On June 10, 2008, Carol Decker walked through the hospital doors a healthy woman with flu-like symptoms and early labor contractions. Three months later, she returned home a blind, triple-amputee struggling to bond with a daughter she would never see.

Unshattered: Overcoming Tragedy and Choosing a Beautiful Life recounts Carol's fight for survival against sepsis and its life-shattering complications. From excruciating skin grafts to learning how to function in daily life without lower legs, a left hand, and her sight, Carol takes us on a personal and raw, yet inspiring journey. She travels through the darkness of trauma, anxiety, and depression to arrive, literally, at the peak of a mountain with a heart full of gratitude and love. More than a story of triumph over tragedy, the book offers inspiring life-lessons and insights which can help readers to do more than endure unimaginable pain and darkness in their own lives. This book can give them the perspective and strength to pick up the pieces of their own tragedies and choose a life of healing, purpose, and joy--a beautiful life.

I Took My Work On Vacation And Guess What Got Done?

So, I went on vacation and I brought the outline of my work in progress. I was sure I would have time in the car to flesh out some characters, work on some chapters, and possibly even finish a draft! I kept my work bag next to me so I could work in all my spare moments.

When my kids got bored and I reached in my work bag for the travel games I'd brought, my hand brushed my work papers. But I didn't pull them out. Instead I listened to trivia questions, found letters on the alphabet on signs, played travel bingo, and looked at license plates from all over the country.

When we all needed a little pick me up and I reached in my bag for the treats, my hand brushed my work papers. But I didn't pull them out. Instead, we decided to see who could eat the most sours and passed out all the yummy treats for those who didn't dare.

Each night when we got back to the hotel, my hand brushed those work papers when I reached in to get the key to the pool. But I didn't pull them out. Instead, I headed down to the pool to watch my kids play and soaked in the hot tub.

By the end of the vacation, I'd dragged those work papers all over but hadn't pulled them out once. But I don't regret it. I have precious memories with my family that will last a lifetime. Work will always be there. (And yes, I've been trying to catch up since I got home.) But that's the best thing about being a writer/mom. I can do what works for me and while it can be tricky finding a balance, I love that I have choices.

And I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Donna Weaver's action adventure romance, A Change of Plans, is being offered for free today! I haven't read this one, but have heard that it's a page-turner.

You can download your free Kindle copy here

Here's the back copy:

Lyn wants to move on. She just doesn't realize it will take pirates, shipwreck, and an intriguing surgeon to do it.

When Lyn sets off on her supposedly uncomplicated and unromantic cruise, she never dreams it will include pirates. All the 25-year-old Colorado high school teacher wants is to forget that her dead fiancĂ© was a cheating scumbag. What she plans is a vacation diversion; what fate provides is Braedon, an intriguing surgeon. She finds herself drawn to him: his gentle humor, his love of music, and even his willingness to let her take him down during morning karate practices. Against the backdrop of the ship’s make-believe world and its temporary friendships, her emotions come alive.

However, fear is an emotion, too. Unaware of the sensitive waters he navigates, Braedon moves to take their relationship beyond friendship--on the very anniversary Lyn came on the cruise to forget. But Lyn's painful memories are too powerful, and she runs off in a panic.

Things are bad enough when the pair finds themselves on one of the cruise’s snorkeling excursions in American Samoa. However, paradise turns to piracy when their party is kidnapped. Lyn’s fear of a fairytale turns grim. Now she must fight alongside the man she rejected, first for their freedom and then against storms, sharks, and shipwreck.

Jennifer Peel has a new release now available and is offering the first two books in her Dating by Design series for only .99 cents! I haven't read any of the books in the series, but have heard good things about them being page-turners, so I thought I'd pass along the deal!

He wants her future. She can’t forget her past. Psychologist Kate Morgan loves her job evaluating clients for the matchmaking service Binary Search. That is, until the one and only Nicholas Wells becomes a client and the new face of the company. Now Kate must take on a new role as his relationship manager to “fix” the actor-turned-writer-and-producer—not to mention egotistical, possibly narcissistic celebrity—and save Binary Search’s reputation.Once upon a time this would have been a dream come true, but older, wiser, and live-within-her-rules Kate knows more than she would like to about narcissists. Annulment is an ugly word and one she can’t or won’t forget. But is Nick the man he says he is on paper or is he the man she sees before her eyes? An adoring father with a generous heart who’s willing to smooth out some of his rough edges for the right woman, making her think who’s fixing who? Can this Hollywood playboy and reluctant matchmaker make the ultimate connection?

Two professional matchmakers. One fake relationship. He's a playboy. She's a good girl. What could possibly go wrong? According to Binary Search's matchmaking service, Meg and Zander's odds of ever having a successful relationship are statistically improbable. Meg has run the numbers and knows the probability, but for some reason she can't quit thinking about her coworker, Zander--the self-proclaimed eternal bachelor. To make matters more interesting, Zander approaches her with an unusual proposition. He's in need of a pretend girlfriend. Meg thinks this could be the answer to get him out of her system, and maybe knock the arrogant man down a few notches in the process. But what she doesn't realize is there is more to this man, something he carefully hides behind his arrogant exterior. And when her feelings begin to be anything but pretend, she knows the odds of getting hurt are more than probable. Will they let the odds over come them, or will they find that all the reasons they are wrong for each other are exactly what make them a perfect fit?

He's met his match. She just doesn't know it yet.

After suffering a very public humiliation, Kenadie Marshall realizes that love shouldn't be left only to personal judgment. Instead of wallowing in her misery, Kenadie creates Binary Search, the perfect balance between a software application and human intuition to help others find true and lasting love, all while personally swearing off relationships for good.
Attractive and loveable Jason Hadley is taken with Kenadie from their first meeting. Determined to prove that love isn't over for her, he does everything he can think of, even if it means using her firm's service and dating other women to stay close to her. Jason quickly gains a rally of supporters, including Kenadie's over-enthusiastic mother and meddling best friend, but will his ploys help Kenadie find her match, or jeopardize everything she's created and lead to further humiliations? In an epic battle of wills, this romantic comedy shows that love is patient, love is kind, and love can heal even the most broken of hearts.

Jennifer Peel is the award-winning bestselling author of the Dating by Design and Women of Merryton series, as well as several other contemporary romances. Though she lives and breathes writing, her first love is her family. She is the mother of three amazing kiddos and has recently added the title of mother-in-law, with the addition of two terrific sons-in-law. She’s been married to her best friend and partner in crime for a lot longer than seems possible. Some of her favorite things are late night talks, beach vacations, the mountains, pink bubble gum ice cream, tours of model homes, and Southern Living. She can frequently be found with her laptop on, fingers typing away, indulging in chocolate milk, and writing out the stories that are constantly swirling through her head.

My Book Was Reviewed in the Deseret News!

I'm so excited that my novel The Capture was reviewed in the Deseret News! My favorite part was,

"Bellon keeps readers guessing and turning pages... Bellon also sheds light on treating different aspects of PTSD..."

This book was one that tells an action story, a love story, and also highlights the sacrifices our special forces and military men and women make--and that is a cause very dear to my heart. I'm so glad this reviewer saw that, too! Made my whole day. Julian and Zaya's story was definitely one of my favorites to write.

When Writing At The Computer Isn't Working

Well, my work-in-progress is stalled. I just sit there and look at the computer screen and the words are not flowing.

I really hate it when that happens.

It's partly because it's summertime and my kids want to go out and do something. My writing time is limited more than usual, but it's also because my motivation seems to have taken a nose dive.

So, this is what I'm doing to combat my motivational issues. I'm going to long hand my story. I used to be a journalist and it's comfortable for me to write things out. I bought myself a little notebook and I've transferred in my character sketches and outline. So now I'm going to work on the story.

Wish me luck.

What do you do when you're not motivated?

Bellon Family Summer Book Club

Every summer I do a Bellon Family Book Club. Each child reads a book of their choosing and they write me a little paragraph about it. Then, we go to an ice cream shop, they pick out their favorite flavor, and we get a table to discuss our books while we eat our ice cream.

I love the time I get to spend with them hearing about their thoughts on the book. I have so many memories of just the animation in their faces when they tell me about their favorite parts or what they felt at the end. I wouldn't miss this experience for the world!

My seven-year-old is really loving The Great Brain books right now and it is so fun to see his face when he reads of some of the experiences the brothers have. That's going to be his book club choice for most of the summer I'll bet and I've already got a smile on my face thinking about what he'll tell us in our book club meeting.

Do you do a summer book club? What is your family reading?

Book Review: Fields of Glory

If you love World War II historical fiction, you will love the new novel, Fields of Glory, by Anna Jones Buttimore.

The Fields family is just trying to survive the war, but when their son doesn't return, and their mother is taken into custody for questioning, it's up to the daughters of the family, Patricia and Eleanor, to keep the farm afloat and get answers to the ever growing number of questions. Can they trust anyone around them, even those who claim to love them? And can they unravel the web of lies to get to the truth before it's too late?

Ms. Buttimore has created a book that is obviously well-researched, with each detail adding a richness to the story. The characters are relatable and both Patricia and Ellie are trying to uncover the secrets that everyone seems to be keeping while at the same time, navigating the twists and turns of love in their lives. I particularly enjoyed Ellie and Jim's story and wished we would have had more of them. They were definitely a highlight for me. But the pacing and tension of the mystery surrounding the family also added another angle to the family's story and will definitely keep readers guessing about all the connections until the end! This wartime story will definitely sweep you back in time and remind you of the strength found in families and love.

Here's the back copy:

Thundersley, Suffolk, 1942: A young man named Jim Walker shows up at Westleigh Farm, home of the Field family, demanding to be taught how to be a farmer but reluctant to reveal anything about himself.

When Thundersley Hall is bombed by a German spy, and Violet Field is taken into custody by the Ministry of War, it is up to her daughters, Patricia and Eleanor, to work out the connection between their new farmhand and the spy.

But suspicions in wartime run deep. Everyone seems to have a secret, even the Hall’s owner, the aristocratic and handsome Alex Farrell. If his romantic intentions toward Patricia are sincere, why is he so unwilling to help her discover the truth about the bombing? And can Eleanor trust her growing fondness for the taciturn Jim, or is her affection for him because he reminds her so much of the brother she lost to the war?

Hanging Out With Carla Kelly

I was lucky to have award-winning historical author Carla Kelly as the guest author at my book club. (And Heather Moore came along as well! Love her!)

Carla had such an amazing writing journey to share. I loved hearing about how she got her start and what her writing process is. Carla is one of my favorite writers because of her ability to pull her readers into the story and I wasn't surprised to hear how meticulously she researches. She spent over two years researching mines before she wrote My Loving Vigil Keeping! She talked about how invested she is in those characters and I was thinking of how truly invested I was as well when I read that book. She brought her brand new book, One Step Enough, the sequel to My Loving Vigil Keeping and I can't wait to start reading!

Carla was so gracious and did a quick interview for us. I'll be posting that video soon!

You can find out more about Carla at her website here

Book Review And Giveaway!

Since Sarah Eden is one of my very favorite authors, I jumped at the chance to be part of the blog tour for her new one, Loving Lieutenant Lancaster.

Arabella Hampton has experienced a lot of loss in her life. When her parents die, she is put in the care of an aunt and uncle who make her life miserable. The only bright spot is her neighbor, an earl and his family of boys that live next door. But even that is taken away from her when the earl passes away. Years later, she now has the chance to be a lady's companion to the late earl's wife, and she eagerly accepts. But once she arrives, it's not clear exactly where she fits. And when a dashing stranger seems to understand how she feels, Arabella is drawn to him, especially since Linus Lancaster has also experienced loss in his life and is wondering where he also fits. But can she ever truly find the love and acceptance she's longed for? And will Linus allow Arabella into his heart?

I loved the characters in this book. Arabella was so relatable with her insecurities and trying to figure out her place in a world that didn't seem to have a place for her. Linus was a believable hero who really was trying to do what's best for everyone, even if it was at his own expense. I loved how these two dealt with each other and the twists and turns on their journey to love. One of the very best parts of the book, though, was seeing so many of the Jonquil family members and catching up with them, as well as the Lancasters. The Duke of Kielder also has a large role and I really loved seeing him and Persephone again. The secondary cast really adds another layer of depth to the already sweet and emotional love story of two wounded hearts finding healing, acceptance and love.

If you love sweet regency romance, you simply have to try Sarah Eden. She will pull you in and let you experience all the emotions of her characters as they find their happily ever afters.

Here's the back copy:

Orphaned as a child, Arabella Hampton was the unwanted and unloved charge of a cruel aunt and neglectful uncle. The only light in her young life was the kindness of the Jonquil family, and she clung to the childish dream of someday living with them at Lampton Park. Now, years later, that opportunity is presented to Arabella in a most unexpected way: she is to be the lady’s companion to the dowager countess. As she takes up residence at the estate, the young woman soon finds that life at the Park is far more complicated than she imagined. The lines of her position are blurred, and she is neither family nor servant. So when the countess plans a grand house party, Arabella is content to hide in the shadows. But one gentleman sees her there.

Lieutenant Linus Lancaster has retired from the navy and is not looking for love, especially when he finds himself entangled in his sisters’ scheme to trap him into finding a wife at a house party at Lampton Park. Yet amid the festivities, he’s impossibly drawn to the dowager’s quiet companion, Arabella. Their regard for each other is undeniable, but they are haunted by their pasts. Can the two find a way to bridge their worlds?

KEEP ME AT CHRISTMAS by Lucinda Whitney

Can the magic of the season keep them together beyond Christmas?

When Luciana Romano arrives in Hudson Springs, New York, her plan is to complete her restoration job at the museum so she can return home to her family in time for Christmas. But a blizzard grounds all flights, and she finds herself stranded. The DiLorenzo family offers her a place to stay, and she accepts their hospitality. But the unexpected attraction between her and the quiet, good-looking son makes it hard to want to leave.

Jack DiLorenzo is stuck. Managing the family’s Italian cafĂ© is not what he’d planned to do with his life, but his sense of duty won’t let him quit. When his grandmother invites a Portuguese woman to stay with them, Jack feels something he hasn’t felt for a long time: hope. He knows he shouldn’t get close to Luciana since she’s leaving as soon as the airport opens, but he can’t help himself.

Yet as the magic of the season begins to work on them, he wonders how he can let go of the woman who’s awakened his heart.

IF THE SUIT FITS by Sally Johnson Finding love at the amusement park can be quite a ride. Becky Perkins has lost her job, her lease, and her car. As a result, she moves back in with her parents and takes the only job she can find: a seasonal position at the local amusement park as a sign spinner. Unfortunately, it includes wearing a foam hot-dog suit. When she crashes into fellow park employee Hudson Lowell, on her first day, suddenly the job doesn’t seem so bad. Actuary Hudson Lowell feels the weight of the world on his shoulders with this assignment. The Gainesville Amusement Park has been struggling for years. It’s his responsibility to advise the park owners as to the viability of the park. Going into the deal, the solution seems pretty simple—until he meets Becky. The more time Becky and Hudson spend together, the more their feelings grow, making it harder and harder for Hudson to be objective about his decision. If the park closes, it will impact the whole town and directly hurt Becky. And how can he hurt the woman he has fallen for?

SECOND CHANCE IN PARADISE by Jennifer Peel A first love that deserves a second chance. Doctoral student Holland Reeves may have aced every class she’s ever taken, but when it comes to life outside her lab, she finds she has more meaningful relationships with test tubes and pipettes than she does with people. That all changes when a surprise wedding invitation arrives, forcing her to return to the small coastal town of Paradise and the Clairborne Resort, where she left her first dream of being Mrs. Clairborne to begin the dream of becoming Dr. Reeves. There she must face her past and, to her surprise, the only man she ever loved, Porter Clairborne, the prodigal son who has unexpectedly returned. Together, Holland and Porter must decide if their love deserves a second chance, and if Paradise will finally live up to its name or forever remain a town of broken dreams.

KINGS CROSSED LOVERS by Donna K. Weaver Will their online magic survive when they meet in real life? Ethan Walters has no time for distractions like romance. Not if he's going to have the brilliant medical career he's always dreamed of. But when he's given a trip to a theme park resort as a college graduation present, he can't exactly say no. Even if Samantha--the one girl with the power to dismantle his goals--is tagging along. Samantha Diederik has managed to avoid her high society mother’s manipulations since the woman moved to Europe. Now she’s back and pressuring Sam to move to New York with her. With that battle on the horizon, Sam proceeds with a vacation with her brother and his roommate. She’s crushed on Ethan for years. They've only met online, but their hours-long conversations are the highlight of her week. Now she has a chance to find out if the cyber magic she's felt with him will translate to real life. And wow, does it ever--with sparks flying! Now all she has to do is find a way to fight off her mother's machinations while convincing Ethan she won’t destroy his dreams.

MARRYING AN ATHLETE by Anne-Marie Meyer Anna Short’s life has been in a slump ever since her boss and boyfriend—who happened to be the same person—dumped her. Now forced to work at a coffee shop, she's pretty sure her life can't go any lower. Enter Michael: her best friend McKenna’s older brother and life-long crush. Michael Jones is the life of the party. As a Defenseman for the New York Rangers, he's always had his pick of women and friends. When he mistakenly proposes to the Mayor's daughter at a party one night, he hightails it out of New York before the media storm hits. He drives to McKenna’s house where he finds her in emotional shambles. Grateful for the distraction her problems give him, he jumps head first into finding a solution.

HER BIG FAT DREAMY BILLIONAIRE EX by Victorine Lieske When McKenna begs them to fake a marriage so they can go with her to a counseling resort designed to help fix her failing one, Anna and Michael agree. After all, the drunken kiss they shared two years ago was definitely in the past. But when they decide to make it their mission to bring McKenna and her husband together, they begin to realize just how good of a team they really are. Felicity should have suspected something when she got hired to take pictures at a resort in Belize, all expenses paid. When she arrives and bumps into her ex-fiancĂ©, Aiden, she realizes she’s been set up. His grandmother is playing matchmaker and every time she turns around Grams is forcing Aiden and her together. But she can’t fall for him again, it was a disaster last time, and she doesn’t want to repeat the past. Aiden can’t believe Felicity is at his resort. She broke his heart five years ago, and he’s determined not to allow it to happen again. But one disaster after another keeps forcing them together and he’s sure Grams is behind all of it. He’s just not sure how long he can hold out without pulling Felicity into his arms and confessing that he never really got over her. Her Big Fat Dreamy Billionaire Ex is a sweet romance, and it is a stand-alone novel.

THE TRUST OF A BILLIONAIRE - Michelle Pennington Can their love survive her secret? Hannah Rhodes is determined to keep her beachfront property, even though she can’t afford to. But it’s her childhood home and she can’t bear to see it plowed down by the billionaire investor who keeps raising his offer to buy it. When the same man hires her to be his daughter’s nanny—providing her the income she needs to reject his offer—the irony is not lost on her.
