Friday Freebie

Today's Friday Freebie is Reluctantly Married by Victorine Lieske.  It definitely looks like a fun afternoon read! Click here to download your free Kindle copy!

Here's the back copy:

Megan Holloway can't stand her local morning show co-host, Adam Warner, even though he's a total hunk. He goads her on-air until she says things she regrets. But since ratings increase each time they have an on-air fight, the producer encourages his behavior.

When a relationship specialist comes onto the show purporting that Adam has hidden feelings for her, she reluctantly agrees to go out with him--on camera. What starts out as one date turns into a viral dating show with Megan and Adam alternating between locking lips and knocking heads.

As Megan fights her growing attraction to Adam, their popularity increases and ABC takes notice, offering them their own program. Not a morning show like Megan is hoping, but a dating show in which she and Adam must marry at the end. With the promise of a hundred thousand dollars and the possibility of scoring what she really wants, her own national program, she signs on.

What she doesn't know is that Adam has fallen in love with her, and his objective is to get her to do the same.

This is a sweet romance, appropriate for any age.

Is A Strong Storyline Enough?

I'm reading a book right now that has a really strong storyline.  It also has a strong female character in it that I really enjoy.

Buuuuut . . .

It has grammatical and spelling errors that are driving me crazy and the hero's voice jumps between tenses. (It's written in first person, but sometimes lapses into third.)

Yet I'm still drawn to this story because I want to see how the conflict ends.  Why would I do that to myself?

So, let's talk for a minute. What makes a strong storyline?

For me, it's these three things:

1.  Strong and relatable characters.

Having a strong hero and heroine that are placed into circumstances that makes a reader wonder what they would do in the same situation draws me in every time.  I love characters that I can care about and would want to be friends with.

2.  Great conflict

The conflict has to be something believable that I could see happening and, again, asking myself how I would react to it.  And I love the stories where problems seem to get bigger and bigger until the characters are twisted around trying to figure out how to get out of the trouble they are in when there doesn't seem to be a way out.  That keeps me turning pages.

3.  A world that the reader can feel a part of and experience with the hero or heroine.

When the world around them is realistic and somewhere I can envision it only adds to the story. Setting is the third leg on this three-legged stool and can never be overlooked.

So, this is what I've learned from reading this book:
  • Great characters and conflict can make it easier to overlook grammar and spelling and other mistakes, but generally it doesn't because it is so distracting.
  • Most of all, what this book drove home for me is that an editor is worth their weight in gold.  Some authors have incredible storytelling talent, but an editor polishes that story and makes it shine. If I leave one thing with you here today, my writer friends, hire an editor. Make your story the best it can be so your readers can truly enjoy it.

Writer Goal Wednesday

photo credit: plnaugle via photopin cc

Well, this has been a productive week. I finished my novella last week, sent it out to beta readers, and am now putting in all their feedback. Beta readers are so important because they catch all the stuff that I couldn't see since I've been "with" the story for so long.  I'm still waiting on two more to come back and I admit, I can't wait to see what they thought of it. This is the very first novella that I've done that is all romance.  Since it's a departure for me, I've been a bit nervous! But so far, the feedback has been positive.

The other thing that happened this week is that I got a new critique partner! I'm moving forward with my new Navy SEAL series and my new partner is going to hold my feet to the fire (as I will do for her) in getting our goals accomplished.  I hope it's fun. So far it's been great!

So my goals for next week are:

  • Finish editing my novella using the feedback from the beta readers.
  • Finish ten pages on my new series.
  • Approve the audio book for Ashes Ashes.
I can do this!

How did your week go? Did you accomplish your goals?

Book Review: Pandora

I got an advanced copy of Jennifer Griffiths new book, Pandora (Goddesses and Geeks Book 1), and boy was it one wild ride!

We meet Blake who is a young congressman jaded by life in Washington.  All of the women seem shallow and selfish and he just needs a vacation.

So he heads to Bermuda, and while he's on vacation he takes a swim in the shallow pool himself and falls quickly into infatuation with a girl named Cressida and her looks. Blake doesn't need to know anything about her, can't even pronounce her entire name (granted, it's a long crazy name) but she looks good on his arm and he's smitten. As soon as she agrees to go out with him, though, Blake ends up in one crisis after another, including a lightning strike and a really funny zoo break just to name a couple.

His conspiracy theorist assistant figures out pretty quickly that all the crises have to do with his trip to Bermuda.  And then he narrows it even further to the beautiful goddess that Blake has fallen for. When the assistant hears Cressida's entire Greek name, he realizes that she is Pandora of Pandora's Box fame.  But Blake is having a hard time wrapping his brain around it.  Could it be true? And how could he ever have a relationship with Pandora---someone who is cursed?

This book is full of zany scenes that will make you laugh and shake your head.  There is some really great melding with Greek mythology and Blake is lovable even when he's clueless. He does have this heroic side that make you cheer for him even at his lowest point. I liked Cressida and how she handled the situation and the relationship. It makes you think about how hard it would be to be cursed!  It was definitely a fun romantic comedy for me.

This book is currently only available in paperback. You can see it here

Here's the back copy:

Blake Wells seems to have it made: the wealthy bachelor life, Kennedy-esque good looks, rising political star. The tabloids love him. But one barracuda date after another drains his hopes for finding a girl who’s sincere. So when his Chief of Staff insists he take a beach vacation, Blake doesn’t go expecting to meet Cressida, the perfect girl. Shazam! She’s seriously a goddess. And even though she protests that she’s bad luck, he’s a goner. But when a string of crazy (albeit hilarious) coincidences threatens sink his career, Blake must choose whether to save his campaign or save the love of his life. If he wants to get this goddess, he’ll have to break her curse. Pandora is the first book in the Goddesses & Geeks fantasy romance series from bestselling romantic comedy author Jennifer Griffith.

Operation Christmas Stockings

Today I was so privileged to be a small part of Operation Christmas Stockings. This is an organization that makes handmade Christmas stockings for our troops that are serving overseas.  Ten ladies made 1000 stockings! Then it was up to us to fill them with some fun and essential items for our troops.

Because my books generally have military characters in them, I've been privileged to talk to several people in the military during my research.  So many of them, especially those deployed during holidays and away from their loved ones, were so grateful for any remembrances from back home. They missed things like Skittles candy, and drink mix-ins to help their water taste better. Anything that would make things a little easier and let them know they're not forgotten.

You might ask yourself, why are they doing stockings in July? Well, with the needs and the time it takes to package and ship all the stockings, it all has to be done in the summer. But it gave me a chance to take time out of my celebrating the patriotic holidays with my family, and remember that there are those protecting my freedoms abroad who are sacrificing their time with their family.

So, yes, filling up a stocking is just a small thing on my part, but I know it will mean so much to a soldier far from home.

And I want to let them know, today and every day, they are never forgotten and always appreciated.

Is It Procrastination If It's Productive?

As you all know, I've been on a writing deadline for that novella.  Oddly, the closer my deadline gets, the more I feel like I need to deep clean my house, organize all my closets, and get out a crafty project that I gave up on years ago.

It's such a funny phenomena that I know other authors go through.  When they're supposed to be writing they're baking or on social media or starting a movie marathon.  Is it our creative brains telling us they need a break?

My family was surprised to see me cleaning like a madwoman when they knew I had some deadlines to meet, but I have to tell you, when I sat down in a very clean room, the words did flow better and I got more done.  So whatever message my brain is sending, it's one I'm glad I listened to.

And can you really call it procrastination if it's productive?

I am so excited today! I made it to my goal! I finished my novella!

It's been such a long time coming and I didn't know if I could do it with so many other unexpected things that have happened this week, but I persevered and it's done. DONE!

Of course now the hard/fun part begins with revising and beta readers.  But I'm just so happy I was finally able to write The End.  Whew!

Another fun thing that happened this week is my narrator finished the audio book for Ashes Ashes. So that's my goal for this week, besides editing the novella, is to listen to the audio book, make sure there aren't any errors and approve it! Yay!

How did you do on your goals this week? What are you working on?

I Loved Today!

This has been a happy day. I have been struggling a bit trying to finish my novella (I'm excited to tell you all about that tomorrow!) but my son took my little ones to the pool so I could have some writing time and I got so much done!

Then, just as I was finishing off the chapter, two of my favorite people knocked on the door and took me for an ice cream run. It was like they just KNEW how much I needed a break and some laughs.

I came back to my writing with a fresh attitude and eyes.  I loved today! I'm surmounting all the difficulties thrown my way and I'm making my goals a reality. Yeah!

Book Review: Picture Perfect

Picture Perfect by Heather B. Moore was originally in an anthology, but is now a novella single and it's a cute story all on its own.

"The Five" was a group in high school that has kept in touch all these years and are still close friends. In this story, Gemma is stunned when her boyfriend breaks up with her.  She takes her bruised heart on a spring vacation with her close friends from "the Five."  Drew is there, and instead of commiserating with her, confuses her with feelings he's had for her for years.  But when her boyfriend pops back into the picture, Gemma is forced to choose---will she lose a best friend or gain a boyfriend?

Love these short sweet romances that always leave me with a smile on my face.  You can download your copy here for only $2.99!

Here's the back copy:

Liz, Gemma, Arie, Jess, and Drew have been best friends since creating “the Five” at Aliso Creek High School. But that was over ten years ago, and each is still trying to find that perfect someone . . . if perfect is even possible.

In PICTURE PERFECT, Gemma has never done anything out of the ordinary, until her boyfriend Randy starts to ignore her. But even cutting and dyeing her hair doesn’t get his attention. She decides to join her old high school friends for spring vacation, only to be faced with Drew, her best friend who suddenly seems interested in her as more than a friend. Gemma must determine if her heart is on the rebound or if it’s finally met its true match.

Friday Freebie

Today's Friday Freebie is a vampire romance by Cheri Schmidt called Fateful. It looks really good!  You can click hereto download your free Kindle copy.

Here's the back copy:

For Danielle Darcey when the sun sets in London the magic begins, but just as that magic begins her fairy tale romance ends...

A huge fan of Jane Austen, Danielle hopes to find her own Mr. Darcy when she leaves Colorado to attend art school in London. Of course she knows it’s silly to wish for that, naive even. But she’s met enough males who lacked respect for women, a growing trend it seemed. And at nineteen...well... However, on only her second night there she gets lost and is threatened by a stalker who proves to be immune to her martial arts training. Before she is completely overpowered, she is then saved by Ethan Deveroux.

While Danielle does find the romance she seeks in Ethan, he’s no Mr. Darcy. Her hero is held by a spell which fractures their chance at a happy ending. During the day Ethan is closer to mortal than immortal and can date her like any other man. Yet, as the sun sets, the powerful magic of an ancient curse returns and the evil of that spell is revealed. When that magic begins, Danielle's fairytale romance ends because Ethan Deveroux is a vampire.

Fateful is a clean, coming of age vampire romance that blends fantasy and paranormal with a healthy dose of romance and a dash of humor.

Writer Goal Wednesday

photo credit: plnaugle via photopin cc

Last week I made my goal to finish my novella.  As you may have guessed over the past months, I was having a hard time with this novella.  Part of the reason was the novella really wanted to be a full blown novel. Cutting back and making it shorter just wasn't working, but I wasn't sure what to do about it because I had it in my head it should be a novella.

And then this week I was getting out of the shower and an idea for a short, romantic novella just came to me. Whole. All the chapters, the characters, the storyline, everything.  And I got dressed and hurried downstairs and wrote half the novella in one sitting. It was awesome. Freeing. I loved that feeling!

So now I am going to make the original novella into a full-fledged novel. That's how it was meant to be.  And this new novella has been such a joy to write I can hardly stand to be away from the computer. When I do have to be away (that whole mom thing, you know) I'm thinking about it and laughing over the dialogue running through my head.  I think I'll be finished with it by tomorrow or the next day at the latest and I'm super excited about it.

Isn't it funny how things seem to always work out how they were meant to?

How did your goals go this week?

Book Review: Lord Fenton's Folly

Lord Fenton's Folly, the second regency romance from Josi Kilpack does not disappoint.  This new genre is starting to rival for her mysteries in my affection!  She's really doing a great job.

In this one we meet a curious sixteen-year-old young Lord Fenton who starts a fire as an experiment (knowing rain is on the way so it won't spread) but gets caught by a ten-year-old girl.  He promises to get her some space for a garden if she'll keep his secret.  She agrees, her little ten-year-old heart completely smitten with him.  Fast forward ten years and things have definitely changed.

Alice, the ten-year-old who kept Lord Fenton's secret, is now coming out into society. Her come-out has been delayed because of family finances, so she is excited to finally have her opportunity to find a husband to love.  At her first ball she sees Lord Fenton's mother. Since Alice is still harboring her secret crush on Lord Fenton, she hopes to see him, but since he isn't there, she had a moment to converse with his mother at least.  I loved the interactions between these two women. Their scenes were outstanding throughout the book.

Lord Fenton has spent the last ten years doing everything he could to annoy his father. He's a dandy, he drinks to excess, and pretty much makes a fool of himself wherever he goes. His father has had enough and threatens to disinherit him---and he's completely serious. Lord Fenton strikes a bargain to straighten up and that includes getting married.  His mother suggests Alice and Lord Fenton agrees. A sweet, biddable girl is just the thing for a marriage of convenience.

Unfortunately, Alice believes he loves her and when she finds out that it's only to be a marriage of convenience she is so hurt she throws up a wall to protect her heart.  The sweet, biddable girl he thought he was getting is no more.  She becomes someone who matches him in insults and wit, not letting him get away with his dandy behavior.  Some of the repartee between them made me laugh out loud. It was really well done, but at the same time you're rooting for them to get past it and see what's really there underneath it all.

The thing that strikes me most about this book, though, is how much the characters grow from the beginning of the story to the end.  There are so many emotional and poignant moments as the author peels back the layers on both of these characters to reveal why they behave this way.  I really enjoyed the journey they took as a couple and I am a sucker for happy endings.

Another five star winner for Ms. Kilpack.

Here's the back copy:

Lord Fenton is a gambler, a dandy, and a flirt-and he must marry or else he will be disinherited, stripped of his wealth and his position. He chooses Alice Stanbridge for two simple reasons: he once knew her as a young girl, and she is the least objectionable option available to him. However, Alice has harbored feelings for Fenton since their first meeting ten years ago, and she believes his proposal is real. When she discovers it is not, she is embarrassed and hurt. However, a match with the most-eligible bachelor in London would secure not only her future but that of her family as well.

Determined to protect herself from making a fool of herself a second time, Alice matches Lord Fenton wit for wit and insult for insult as they move toward a marriage of convenience that is anything but a happy union. Only when faced with family secrets that have shaped Fenton's life does he let down his guard enough to find room in his heart for Alice.

It comes out in October, but you can preorder your copy here

More Behind the Scene Pics From Mysteries of Cove

Shadow Mountain released some behind the scenes photos of the filming of the book trailer for J. Scott Savage's new steampunk book, Mysteries of Cove. Doesn't it look fantastic? (My son and I are on the back row). (And you can see the entire album on the Shadow Mountain Facebook page, by the way.)

It was so fun to be there with some great people and really experience acting on a green screen. It's not as easy as it first appears! Something we will never forget for sure.

Yeah, so it will undoubtedly be an awesome trailer, (I'm in it so that's a given, right? Haha) but you've seriously got to read this book. It's definitely something your whole family will enjoy.  (And don't worry, I will share the trailer with you as soon as it's out!)

Here's the back copy:

Trenton Colman is a creative thirteen-year-old boy with a knack for all things mechanical. But his talents are viewed with suspicion in Cove, a steam-powered city built inside a mountain. In Cove, creativity is a crime and invention is a curse word.

Kallista Babbage is a repair technician and daughter of the notorious Leo Babbage, whose father died in an explosion an event the leaders of Cove point to as an example of the danger of creativity.

Working together, Trenton and Kallista learn that Leo Babbage was developing a secret project before he perished. Following clues he left behind, they begin to assemble a strange machine that is unlikely anything they ve ever seen before. They soon discover that what they are building may threaten every truth their city is founded on and quite possibly their very lives.

Writer Goal Wednesday

photo credit: plnaugle via photopin cc

I have been working like crazy on my novella this week and got ten pages done and the first chapter edited. I'm starting to really buckle down and want to have the novella done by this weekend.  I love how it's shaping up and the scenes are really starting to flow onto the paper. It's exciting for me!

So, that's my goal for this week, to finish my novella! It's a big one, but deadlines are looming.  And I already have the next project mapped out, so I need to get my butt in the chair and get writing. (Especially on days like today when the kids are busy and gone and I have uninterrupted writing time!)

How did you do on your goals this week?

Book Review and Giveaway!

Stick in the Mud meets spontaneity

I am so happy to be part of the blog tour for Rachael Anderson's new book, Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity. I really enjoyed her book Rough Around the Edges Meets Refinement and this romance is is the same vein.

In Stick in the Mud, we meet Colton, a cowboy who loves what he does. What you see is what you get and he is as steady as they come.  He's also giving eleven-year-old Kasja horse-riding lessons (you might remember Kasja from the previous book) and when he meets Kasja's aunt Sam, he's intrigued by her approach to life. She drives a sunshine yellow bug, has a lime green fuzzy steering wheel cover and a summer bucket list that includes riding a bull and having a fling with a cowboy. They are definitely opposites!  At one point in the book, they are compared to a tree with roots (Colton) and the wind in the tree branches (Sam). It's pretty accurate!

Of course they have an attraction to each other, but it's complicated.  Sam has a job offer in New York for her dream job. She's only home for the summer (hence the summer fling thing). But when things heat up between her and Colton, could she give up her dreams for a possibly forever relationship? Or will he just be a fun summer memory? Could Colton give up his staid way of living to meet her halfway? I really enjoyed reading to find out.

I thought the author did a great job of building the relationship between the two characters. They felt realistic and I loved the ending. A great afternoon read! (Be sure to scroll all the way down to enter the giveaway!)

Here's the back copy:

Home from college for the summer, Samantha Kinsey steps into her role as nanny for her two favorite little charges. But when she finds herself playing chauffeur more than playmate, her summer outlook quickly turns from fun to bleak. That is, until she drives the girls to a family-owned ranch and meets Colten McCoy—a genuine, hard-working cowboy, who's as set in his ways as he is handsome. Although he claims he doesn't need any fun in his life, Sam’s determined to help him find it. But she'll soon discover that cowboys are about as easy to train as wild mustangs. Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity is about an adaptable girl and a not so adaptable guy. It’s about learning to accept people for who they are and realizing that sometimes who they are is exactly who they should be.

Freebie Friday---If You Have Middle School Kids, You Need This One!

Today's Freebie Friday is an awesome book that your middle school child will love---and you, too! It's the first in the Far World series, Water Keep.  It's witty and fun and J. Scott Savage has created a story that will keep your family completely entertained. We really enjoyed it. Click here to download your free Kindle copy!

Here's the back copy:

Other people may see thirteen-year-old Marcus Kanenas as an outcast and a nobody, but he sees himself as a survivor and a dreamer. In fact, his favorite dream is of a world far away, a world where magic is as common as air, where animals tell jokes and trees beg people to pick their fruit. He even has a name for this place — Farworld.

When Marcus magically travels to Farworld, he meets Kyja, a girl without magic in a world where spells, charms, and potions are everywhere, and Master Therapass, a master wizard who has kept a secret hidden for thirteen years, a secret that could change the fate of two worlds.

But the Dark Circle has learned of Master Therapass's secret and their evil influence and power are growing. Farworld's only hope is for Marcus and Kyja to find the mythical Elementals —water, land, air and fire —and convince them to open a drift between the worlds.

My Glamorous Day And A Cover Reveal!

Today has been such an awesome and glamorous day! My son and I got to go be in the book trailer production for J. Scott Savage's new steampunk book, Mysteries of Cove. It was so much fun! We got great costumes, hair, makeup, and were basking in all the awesomeness of a professional production.  It was amazing!

Don't you love his hat?

Then, I got to do a photoshoot for my new author head shot. What do you think?

And to top it all off, I got the cover for the Timeless Romance Anthology I'm going to be a part of! It's so pretty, what do you think?

I am so excited for this project. I hope you love it as much as I do!
