Regency Book Review and a Giveaway!

I was really excited to read Heidi Kimball's new book, A Guarded Heart. The back copy sounded so good!

The book opens with Eleanor Hayward being reintroduced to society. She's been away for three years after a family scandal and is understandably nervous. Things seem to be going well, until she meets the one man that she had been trying to forget. Edmund Fletcher is just as shocked to see her. Eleanor had almost become his wife, until an incident at a ball ruins everything. Now, three years later, Eleanor and her circumstances have changed, yet Edmund finds he still has feelings for her. Can they find a way to put the past behind them? Or is it best to leave it buried?

I really loved Eleanor and Edmund. The author draws them so well they fairly jump off the page with witty banter and plenty of emotion. Their love story is such a roller-coaster ride and I really was invested in them finding their happily-ever-after. I thought the obstacles were realistic and true to the time period, and the secondary cast nicely rounded out the book. The author does switch between the year Eleanor and Edmund met to the present-day, which was disconcerting at first, but filled in some of the gaps and helped the reader get to know the characters and what has driven them to this point. I thought the author really stood out in her beautiful description and writing style and I will definitely look for other books by her. This one is going on my keeper shelf!

Here's the back copy:

Three years after a shocking scandal destroyed her family and forced her into isolation, Eleanor Hayward finally has an opportunity to put her painful history and dashed hopes behind her. But reentering society is no simple task. In her cousin's glittering ballroom, Eleanor is stunned when she comes face-to-face with the man who broke her heart those years before.

Edmund Fletcher thought he had laid the past to rest until he unexpectedly encounters the woman who so nearly became his wife. Soon to be engaged to another, Edmund knows he must let go of the complicated feelings he harbors for Eleanor. However, when the Hayward scandal resurfaces and the truth behind their parting is revealed, Eleanor and Edmund are left reeling. Tormented by thoughts of what could have been, they realize it is impossible to rewrite history. But is there a future in which they might both find happiness—and true love?
