I'm so excited to be part of the blog tour for Carolyn Twede Frank's new book, Heart of the West. I love a good western romance and this book hits all the right notes!
Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, was one of my favorite shows back in the day, and this book is reminiscent of it. Kate Donahue gets her medical degree back east, but no one wants her to practice. Her fiance wants her by his side, entertaining his friends, and smiling her pretty smile. Her parents agree. So Kate runs away to Craig, Colorado after she sees an ad saying that the town is in need of a doctor. Things aren't quite what she thought when she gets to the small town, however, and she must earn her way into the townspeople's heart. Of course, there's one man who she feels a connection to right away, but he has a tortured past. Can either of them overcome their personal obstacles to possibly reach for a chance at love between them?
I really enjoyed Kate's character as she tried to forge her own path as a doctor while figuring out what she truly wanted and finding her inner strength. The townspeople were really well drawn and it was easy to imagine each of them. Craig, Colorado came to life under the author's hand and readers will be rooting for Kate. There is a nice arc of tension with land rights and figuring out what really happened in Lucas's past that kept me turning pages. Lucas is such an interesting hero, and more than meets the eye. The author definitely takes the reader through all the emotions as we discover more about this man. He deserved a happily-ever-after! I closed the book thinking that this is such a sweet story with all the feels you want from a romance. I'll definitely be looking for more from Ms. Frank. There were a few characters in this book that I hope may get a story of their own in the future!

Here's the back copy:
Independent-minded women are considered highly unsuitable in Kate Donahue’s wealthy Long Island society. Yes, Kate would lead a proper life should she marry, but her dream of practicing medicine would surely be thwarted by her domineering fiancĂ©. To follow her dream, she must take dramatic measures. So when she reads a newspaper ad seeking a qualified small-town physician, Kate embarks on a new life in the Wild West.
Upon her arrival in the rugged settlement of Craig, Colorado, Kate is disappointed to discover that even in the West, no one wants a woman doctor. As she struggles to establish her practice, she is kept busy fending off the unwanted attentions of a local rancher, a man unnervingly reminiscent of the ex-fiancĂ© she left behind in New York. Romantic entanglements are the last thing on Kate’s mind. That is, until she meets Lucas McCurdy, an Irish immigrant with whom she feels an undeniable connection. But when their relationship inflames a dangerous land battle, Kate and Lucas find themselves defenseless in a lawless town—a perilous position that may cost them everything.
