Book Review: On the Run

On the Run is the newest book in Traci Hunter Abramson's Guardian series. The back copy sounded good, so even though I missed a few books in the series, I thought I'd pick this one up. I wasn't too lost, though I probably would have enjoyed some character appearances more if I'd read previous stories. 

Elle Jameson is in the middle of a big story that points to a big conspiracy and when the people she reaches out to are killed or missing, she goes on the run. Nolan is a new "guardian" and gets assigned to help her. Nolan is earnest and tries his best to protect Elle, but the people after them are relentless. I thought the plot had plenty of layers and the secondary cast added a nice depth to the story. There are chase scenes and fight scenes, and all the tension you would expect from a Traci Hunter Abramson book. It was clear that Ms. Abramson had recently visited the countries that the story is set in and was eager to fill in details that she'd personally experienced. I thought Elle and Nolan were a root-worthy couple and was really hoping they'd live to get that happily-ever-after. The reader also gets a villain's point-of-view which can make the stakes that much higher. At the end of the day, I thought Elle was smart and believable and Nolan was sweet and persistent---a well-matched couple. Abramson fans will have a hard time putting this one down!

The World Lost a Bright Light

Sometimes, in our busy, chaotic world, it's hard to reach out to people and truly connect with them. Collin Kartchner was someone who made it his life's mission to help people put down their phones and connect with others. To give eight second hugs. To be present with your family. To not let social media run your life. He spoke all over the country (and even in Canada) with that message and touched thousands of people.

Collin was also our neighbor and he was a friend. Our family has so many good memories of him. Stopping by the kids' lemonade stand and giving them $20 for a "great cup of lemonade," or asking one of the boys to be his sidekick for a Primary talent show, or just stopping to chat and tell a joke to make us laugh. He had so much energy and light and he freely shared that with everyone around him. When we found out yesterday that he'd passed away suddenly, so many fun memories were shared and so many tears were shed. Collin Kartchner was a man who loved his family, his God, and his fellow man and he was never afraid to show that. We are the richer for having known him.

He will be very missed.

It Will Be Our Little Secret!

Well, I can't give a whole lot of details right now, (shh, it's all hush hush) but my regency romance, The Marquess Meets His Match, was chosen to be in a readers subscription box! So that means I'm going to be signing a lot of books today and putting together some really great regency gift bags to go along with them. Super excited!

The Best Day for a Young Reader!

My little guy is a big reader and his new favorite book at the moment is The Lost Wonderland Diaries by J. Scott Savage. He's already read it once and is re-reading it now because he loved it so much. 

Well, yesterday, J. Scott Savage himself came to our house to make a special delivery (safely, of course, with a mask and social distancing) and brought over a poster, a Wonderland card, a signed bookplate, artwork, and a bookmark, and was totally the highlight of my son's birthday.

I Need Some Opinions

Okay, you guys, I need some opinions. Our family went on a little getaway this weekend, and while we were driving, a Christmas story for Colt and Brenna came to me. So, for those of you who have read my books, do any of you remember who Colt and Brenna are? 

I'm hesitant to write their Christmas story because they were main characters from a few books ago. Would anyone even remember them? But maybe I should just go ahead and write it, because the story is cute. Sigh. I can't decide. What do you think?

Book Review: Otherwise Engaged

Joanna Barker's new book, Otherwise Engaged, is out and it is so good! I really enjoyed this one.

Rebecca Rowley is a quiet rebel to the society that has so many restrictions for women. She rides bareback and is secretly engaged! It's all so exciting---until she meets her new neighbor. Lieutenant Nicholas Avery. He has moved in next door with his half-sister and they both are quite vexing---and fascinating at the same time. Nicholas and Rebecca form a friendship, but she is soon drawn to him as more than a friend. But should she explore her feelings for Nicholas or go on with the man she's already---and maybe a bit hastily---promised her hand in marriage to?

I loved everything about this book. The descriptions, the characters, and the setting worked seamlessly together to highlight this tender tale of love. Nicholas is a sigh-worthy hero who has his faults, but is working so hard to do what he thinks is right---no matter what the cost. Rebecca is making all sorts of mistakes with her life, but finds a true friend in Nicholas. Their journey to love was such a page-turner for me. I really enjoyed seeing them find admirable traits in the other person and have their opinions change. The secondary cast was also well-drawn and added to the main story with all their foibles and perspectives. This one is definitely going on my keeper shelf!

Fall is my favorite season of the year. I love the crisp air and snuggling up with a book and a blanket on my porch swing. It's just so perfect!

Book Review: When A Stranger Watches

Kathy Oram Peterson's new mystery, A Stranger Watches, is full of twist and turns as well as a slow-burn romance. Perfect for snuggling up with on a cold day.

As with every good mystery, we see the murder first, but not who the murderer is. Poor Kyra's father has been estranged from his daughter and is on his way to make amends. But before he can leave, he's murdered. But who did the deed?

Kyra Fletcher hasn't heard from her father in too long. He sent a strange birthday card, but she knows something is wrong, so she travels to see him with her dog Boo. Almost from the moment she arrives, strange things are happening. Her dad's almost ex-wife is acting threatening toward Kyra---more so than just "stepmother" issues. Even her dad's lawyer seems unhappy about her arrival. Sheriff Shane McQuire steps in to help, but he's got a problem teenaged daughter of his own to deal with. But as their investigation goes deeper, Kyra and everyone she's come to care about are in danger. Can they figure out who the killer is before Kyra becomes the next victim?

I thought this was a well-done mystery and I didn't guess the killer until right before it was revealed. There were some really great red herrings! I really thought it was one character and was surprised that it wasn't. The small town was easy to imagine and the characters were memorable. At times the pacing was slow and the chemistry between the hero and heroine just wasn't there, (the hero was in law enforcement years ago and saved the heroine when she was a young girl at a youth camp, which sort of made it seem like he was much, much older than her which was hard for me romance-wise) but I did like the ending and how our hero and heroine dealt with the danger. I was glad the heroine was smart and didn't make questionable decisions. It made the mystery that much better. I great "spooky" read for October!

I'm so excited for today! It's Canadian Thanksgiving and as a Canadian living in the United States, our family is so lucky to get TWO Thanksgivings! I can't wait to have all of my family around the dinner table today. 

And I'm so grateful for the blessings I've been given. It's been a difficult year for everyone, and when I look back, I can see the moments where my family drew closer together and things we previously took for granted are definitely seen in a different light. 

And I'm so grateful for all of you that support and encourage me in my writing. I love that I get to do what I love.

In Expectations at Canterwood, we have a case of mistaken identity that makes for a charming story! I loved how Richard and Marina really complemented each other and their love story was so sigh-worthy. I really enjoyed this one. Some really great moments on their journey to love!

A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Things have been a bit crazy for me lately. A few days ago, I was at my desk working, when all of the sudden my screen went black. I wasn't that worried and pressed the button to reboot. When I couldn't get anything to work, I called in my husband and my son who are computer experts. And then I started to wonder when the last time I backed up my computer was. 

All my books. All my current work-in-progress. My pictures. Everything. Had I backed it all up? That's when I started to worry. 

But I had faith in my husband and son so I cleaned the whole house while I waited for the verdict. (I'm a stress cleaner). The news was grim. I'm not really that tech-savvy, but everything they said sounded bad. Corrupted files. Something about the hard drive. Scary stuff like that. The takeaway was my computer as it had been was dead. Kaput. But maybe they could still get some files off of it from the last backup. 

Maybe. 

They worked late that night and my sweet husband stayed up until two in the morning trying valiantly to get back what he could, then got up at six the next morning to keep trying. By noon that day my computer was running again, but I'd lost some files. Not everything. It wasn't catastrophic, but I've spent every moment since then trying to recreate the lost files. It's been stressful, but I'm finally feeling like I am where I was before the crash. And I'm so very grateful that I had backed up the important stuff and I have a sweet husband and son who worked so hard to get it all back for me. I am ready for a restful weekend!

Book Review: Forget Me Not

As you all know, I am a big Sarah Eden fan and I was thrilled that she is doing a story on the Jonquil parents. And Forget Me Not  knocked it out of the park!

Julia Cummings starts out the story as a young, headstrong girl who knows what she wants out of life. But a series of huge losses changes her. Lucas Jonquil is sure nothing could ever be the same when his best friend and two siblings pass away. He vows he'll live the life they never got to---but that means leaving his childhood home and his friend Julia behind. He doesn't look back for many years and when he finally returns home, Julia has changed. She's definitely not happy to see him. But an unexpected betrothal and marriage between the two of them makes everything worse. Lucas is faced with a decision that will have long-lasting consequences. He must find some common ground with his new wife or live a life of misery. But can he win Julia's love or has the battle been lost before it's begun?

I really enjoyed the twists and turns of this love story. Julia has been dealt a harsh hand and her heart is wounded. Lucas unknowingly was part of that wounding and has much to make up for. He's woefully bad at trying to woo his wife and calls on his friends, the "Gents" for help. It was such a sweet group of men who seemed so different, but would do anything for the members of their group. And the "help" Lucas received from them was pretty funny at times. I thought the book had some quite realistic emotional ups and downs, some tender moments that keep the reader hoping, and a sweet ending that will make you sigh with happiness. Hopefully this is a start to a new series with all the Gent stories in them. If so, I am eagerly awaiting the next book!
