Word Count Wednesday

Well, I had critique group last night and it was my manuscript under the microscope.  It wasn't too bad, really, and we had a lot of laughter and good food to go along with the critique so that made everything better.

This book I'm working on is the sequel to All Fall Down, so I assumed that everyone would remember the characters from that book, but it is clear to me now that I need to add a little backstory so this could be read stand-alone as well.  And I also need to add some more layers of funny to the characters---to flesh them out a bit and match their personalities.  I wish I was more funny so that humor came easily to me.  I had a few moments in there that my critique group liked, so I just have to find some more of that.  But I'm too tired from staying up until all hours of the night with my crit group to write anything like that today.  When I'm tired everything seems funny and people look at me like I've lost my sanity because it's really not.  So I'll wait a bit until I'm more rested.  Haha!

But I am working hard this morning going over critique notes and adding words.  It's going to be a productive day, I can feel it.  I think it would be fun to do a sprint or something one of these weeks.  Anyone up for that?

How was your count this week?

I got 3544 words written this week. I really didn't spend a lot of time working on my WIP, or should I say, I didn't get many new scenes done. I did a little critiquing, and some rewriting. And from what I was told on Monday, I will have my very first official edits for "Firesetters" by Friday, so next Wednesday my word count will be zero. Just letting you know that now. *giggles*

I could use a good sprint this week, because next week, and maybe even the one after that, it won't be happening.

I pulled out a work-that-hasn't-progressed-much, and suddenly found inspiration for a minor character's back story. I've written 2,000 words about him, and he's dragged in three new minor characters. Why aren't my main characters this interesting?

What day is good for you to sprint Debra?

T, that's awesome! Maybe your secondary characters should become your primary? :)

Tonight would be good. My husband has his meetings on Wednesday nights, and I would't have to explain why I'm growling at the computer. (I make a lot of nervous mistakes trying to type fast.) But if Thursday works for you, I'll just tell him in advance to ignore any of the torturous sounds coming from my direction.

Debra, does 8:00 tonight work? And anyone else who wants to join us is welcome. :)

Finally, I can post an official word count (having saved my file appropriately and all)

1590!

Buffed up earlier chapters to a nice shine and added an extra chapter to fix a little scratch. Woohoo!

I might be able to join for a little bit around 8:15. We're talking Nano sprinting, right? Throw a bunch of words at the wall and see what sticks and what slithers wetly on its way down to the floor?

8:00 my time or yours?

My time. Is that okay?

Jon, we are doing whatever kind of sprinting you want, Nano or otherwise. :)

It looks like Utah and Arizona are on the same time zone during the winter time. 8pm it is!

It's 8! Who's sprinting? I am!

I'm joining the race after getting one boy down to bed. (puff, puff)

I'd stalled out at the end of the week last week and was getting really frustrated especially when I was within 10K of making it to 50K which is my "goal" for my rough drafts. Then I go in and add about 20K in Revision and edits.

But the baby had a few naps this week and I was able to get somewhere around 8 K in and hit 51 K for the novel and so I can put it on the back burner for a few months Until its time to revise this one.

1051 at 8:52, and I'm done. That was fun!

I basically just wrote a scene from the point of view of the bad guy, giving a little bit of his motivations, a tiny bit of background and some of the behind-the-scenes stuff that explains incidents that happened in my MC's POV. Not all of them, though. =)
