Word Count Wednesday

Well, my word count is still way down because I'm just finishing up the last details on this book so it can go to press.  I do plan on drafting my new novel soon, though, and I'm sure my word count will pick up when that starts.  (If it goes as well as I think it will)  Maybe we can even do some more writing sprints together.

How's your writing going now with kids back in school?  I was surprised at how quickly we picked up our old routine.  I love nap times for my kids.  It really helps to have a regular block of time for writing.

I hope you had a great writing week!

I'm getting nothing done because destructo-boy is home alone and is into everything. This is going to be a frustrating year if I don't figure something out. I wanted to get one more book done this summer but It turned out I am only 20,000 words into it. Sigh!

I was dragging my feet with my story idea, and I couldn't figure out why. What was wrong with me? Why didn't I want to write, when I had an idea and everything? But while I was browsing Daily Science Fiction, I thought, I wonder if I could condense that idea into 1000 words and submit it to that site? I could change the POV, too, from one character to the other ...

Suddenly, I was charged with excitement and I started writing without hesitation.

I've now written 655 words, though, and I am starting to doubt that I can condense my idea into such a short format. By the time I get everything explained, my word limit is up, and I haven't got to the climax yet. If I leave anything out, the story won't make sense. So I guess I won't be submitting it there, but maybe I can find another website to give me hope.

Not much writing this week, though I have read, like, four books, one was Sariah's new book. All the time she was on Six LDS Writers, I never hear of her writing a book, just you other five. I also did some editing, and some filling in on one of my stories I want to query nationally. Or was that last week? It's been tough since a week ago Friday. Mike, my husband, went into the hospital with terrible abdominal pains. I kept asking the ER doctor to order a ultrasound of his gallbladder. I was sure it was his gallbladder because I went through the same thing two years ago. No! He knew better. He had the degree. Sheesh...

I just submitted Bucket List of Hope for the very first time. That was two days ago, and I still have't received anything saying they got the e-mail. That is a first, too. Usually they, (other publishers/lit agencies) at least, acknowledge the submission. The email wasn't bounced back, so it must've been a good email. I wonder if I should email them and ask if they got it? If so, how long should I wait before I ask?

I wrote 1000 or so on my new draft. Plus I did some outlining and revising. I found a great book about plot and structure by James Scott Bell. It's the best writing book I've found in a long time, and it's really helping with my outline.

It doesn't seem in character for you to be sarcastic, Debra, so I have to assume you came to the Frog Blog late. Sariah was one who always promoted her books when they came out, and was, uh, tirelessly enthusiastic about them.

The gall of that doctor! Sheesh! I'm always sheepishly telling the doctors I see stuff like: "So, I know you doctors must hate this, but I was looking at my symptoms on WebMD and cross-referencing with Wikipedia, and I think I might have..."

(Also, you mentioned last week something about your books being published. Where can I get one?)

I got about another page written (bah!) but it's been a busy week, prepping for the boys' first birthday party (successful) and the end of the summer season at work (bleh.) Still have to finish the scene, but I got distracted doing inane research. Like, how big of a cartridge would you need to be able to fit a small flash drive inside it? (Answer: probably anti-aircraft or bigger)

Michelle, I feel your pain!

Melanie, I'm so happy that you've got some excitement going! :)

Debra, I'm so sorry about your husband and I'm crossing my fingers for all the luck on your submission.

Rebecca, I'll have to look into that book. Thanks for the recommendation.

Jon, adding to the scene and juggling family life is always a success, right? Sounds good to me, anyway. :)

No, I really don't remember Sariah doing that. I came in on their blog, maybe the last two years? Maybe three.

And, really Jon, don't dis my knowing my hubby's symptoms. (I mean this in the nicest way) It really is his gallbladder, and Thursday he is finally getting that stupid ultrasound before being scheduled to surgery to remove that confounded, useless organ. I was there when he first started having the symptoms. The doctor pressed his fingers into Mike's abdomen six hours after he'd been throwing up and being in mind-numbing pain. Mike was barely able to rationally communicate at that time, yet the doctor poo-pooed everything I said and took the word of a demented man instead. Bad move!

You know, there is a good reason men don't give birth--I mean besides the obvious internal/external makeup of their bodies. I believe women can handle pain much better than men. Sorry, this is my opinion. Disagree if you must . . .

Oh, and my books will be published soon. Firesetters (if they keep that name, and I hope they do,) in February, and Changes in June, 2013. Such a long time from now, yet I know it will pass so quickly.

I've been diligently working on a major rewrite. I even gave the MC a different name because she went from 16 to 12. It's a whole new world. (cue music)

I'm also babysitting my newest little niece. She's a wonderful baby, but still time consuming. I wouldn't have it any other way, though. My oldest is in school but my two youngest are off track. They are also time consuming. :)

Debra - doctors that don't listen to wives should be tied down and forced to listen to Barney.

I actually had a great week for word count--about 7500 words on my project. This feels really good, because I've been SO out of the writing groove--hadn't written a new word in ages. It's good to be moving forward again, even if I STILL haven't figured out who the villain is.

Debra, no disrespect intended on my part. I only wanted to make the pun and share my little personal anecdote on the subject. My wife is actually pretty good at determining what an illness is, but she's terrible about seeking medical help on her own behalf.

I'm also not going to disagree with you on the pain comment. I'm such a wimp.

Stephanie, wow, that's awesome!

Villain suggestion: He's a disgruntled office worker (is there any other kind?) who is the king of passive aggressive: he takes two donuts from the box before anyone else has a chance, he staples papers on the sides, not the corner, he uses the entire roll of paper in the bathroom, he leaves the lids off of dry erase markers, he randomly turns computers off... I could go on, but I won't. (He would never, I mean NEVER eat cookies for breakfast.)

Hey, thanks, Jon. Maybe I can work with that . . . :)
