My grandmother, Thelma Chalifoux, would have been 93 years old today. She did some amazing things in her life, including being the first Metis woman appointed to be a senator in the Canadian federal government. She dined with the Queen of England and met dignitaries from across the world, but her only mission was to be a voice for those who felt they could never be heard.
She was a proud Metis woman, who wanted to see the Metis culture remembered and celebrated. To honor that wish, I've written a children's book, A Metis Christmas: Thelma's Wish and I'm so excited to show you the cover today! The illustrator, Mikey Brooks, studied Metis artists and history and he has done an absolutely incredible job capturing the look and feel of Metis folk art and family. I think my grandmother would have loved the story. I can still hear her say, "I'm proud of you, my girl." And I know she is and always was.
Love you, Grandma Kookum. Happy birthday!
