In the Non-Fiction Corner
Today Lauren B. reviews the new book, J. Golden Kimball, by Kathryn Jenkins Gordon.
I learned two things while reading this book.
1. If I were to write a book, I would want to write one
exactly like Kathryn Jenkins Gordon.
2. If I were to have the humor of one General Authority, it
would be J. Golden Kimball.
This book was such a treat to read.
I absolutely love the author's style. Gordon slips in her own little comments
and observations that make the book entertaining and fun to read. Not that J. Golden Kimball needs more entertainment than he already brings… I had no idea
the man that he was and the humor he brought to every situation he was in. And
the people loved him for it. I had no idea how popular he was, and how people
flocked to hear him speak. What stood out to me was as many people showed up to
his funeral as did to Brigham Young's!
J. Golden Kimball was a great man
that inspired many. He was aware of his weakness, including his very imperfect
home life, and he was willing to acknowledge it. People were drawn to him
because they saw the imperfections in him, and if a man of God had things to
work on, maybe there is hope for someone like them. Even with all of the very
difficult things Kimball had to deal with, he kept his humor and positive
attitude. What a way to get through life! Being happy and making others happy, too. That is an example we can all look to.
I highly recommend this book to
anyone who wants to learn about a little known figure in church history. Or to
anyone who wants a good laugh, because the sidebar stories that Gordon chose to
include are hilarious. A wonderfully touching book that will give you plenty of
jokes and stories to start off any sacrament meeting talk you give for the rest
of your life.
