Proud Mom Moment With A Utah Photographer

Today I want to share with you a little bit of one of my children's talents. (Yes, I'm a proud mom!)

My son Jared is a photographer (you can see his website here)  and one of the things I like best about his pictures is how he captures the joy of the moment. He posted some of his favorites from weddings he's done recently and while the pictures of the bride and groom were gorgeous, I really loved the ones he snapped of these two older men and the kids. There is so much beauty and happiness in those faces, don't you think?

But the bride and groom pictures were amazing, too, if I do say so myself. These were my two bridal favorites:

I love seeing my kids following their dreams and doing what they love. If you need an affordable Utah photographer, he's definitely one to talk to!

Book Review and Giveaway!

I am thrilled to be part of the blog tour for Sarah Eden's new book, A Fine Gentleman. She is one of my very favorite authors and this book is part of her Jonquil brothers series---one that I've been waiting forever for. And it was worth it!

Jason Jonquil is a very successful barrister and he works hard to observe every propriety. He wants to live up to his father's example of a gentleman. His life is predictable, but he's fine with that---or so he thinks. When Mariposa Thornton walks into his office and entirely upends him, he's not sure what to do, yet, as a gentleman, he's bound to help her.

Mariposa has one mission---to find her family. She goes to the man who seems most qualified to help her, but doesn't give him all the details. Trusting anyone with that would be dangerous. So she pretends to be someone she's not so Jason won't see how very desperate she is. But will that decision come back to haunt her if Jason ever finds out her true purpose?

Sarah Eden is one of my favorite authors because she delivers a layered plot, with realistic characters, and, as a reader, I know I'll be lost in her story and truly experience the emotions of it. I love how she connects people and that talent truly shines in A Fine Gentleman. We see the Jonquil family connections and they aren't all rosy and happy, but they're real and difficult sometimes, just like any other family. I like how each character puts on a public face to hide hurts and wounds, as we all do, and yet each character wants to let another person in, to show their inner self and truly be loved for who they are. That's why her characters are so easy for her readers to love and feel like old friends!

Jason is a sigh-worthy hero because of how much he grows during this story. He has a perfect public face, but Mariposa is just the one to bring out his inner self and show him how to truly be the gentleman he claims he is. I love how even when he's exasperated with her, he's drawn to her. Some of his early scenes with Mariposa are laugh out loud funny, and the tender scenes between them will make you awww. It was also nice to see Jason's older brother Philip and hear about Corbin's marriage and Stanley's adventures. I hope Stanley gets his own story!

Mariposa is such a strong heroine. She's been through the horrors of war and done what she had to in order to survive. During her escape from Spain, she became separated from her family so she's in England to find them and needs Jason's help. I love how she can read Jason so well, and how she's able to really see beyond his persona. Even though some heavy events surround her, Mariposa still has some wonderfully light-hearted moments and it's easy to identify with her. And I'll never look at turnips or potatoes the same again!

This is another Sarah Eden book that will have a place of honor on my rainy day shelves. Be sure to clear your schedule before you start A Fine Gentleman because you won't want to put it down! Can't wait for the next one!

Here's the back copy:

London barrister Jason Jonquil has spent his entire life working to establish his identity as a gentleman, a man of refinement like his father and brothers. But when fiery Spanish beauty Mariposa Thornton walks into his office, he finds himself losing his grasp on his dignified character. The woman is infuriating, pushing him to the limit of his legendary patience. However, her case seems simple enough—a small matter of inheritance. Or so he believes.

Once a well-born lady, Mariposa fought to survive the brutalities of Napoleon’s war on Spain. She braved horrific perils and undertook dangerous missions on behalf of those fighting against the invading French army. But her greatest battle still lies ahead: after being separated from her family, Mariposa sets in motion a plan to reunite with her loved ones in England. To avoid drawing the attention of the French, Mariposa dons a carefully crafted persona to conceal her true purpose. As Jason and Mariposa are drawn together by the case, they come to know the people beneath the masks they both wear. When the truth of Mariposa’s quest is revealed, the couple is pulled into a mystery that will test the limits of their courage—and expose the true desire of their hearts.

Book Review: The Dating Experiment

I'm very excited to be part of the blog tour for Elodia Strain's new book, The Dating Experiment. I've been a fan of Elodia's for a long time and I have been waiting for this one!

Gabby Malone is a girl down on her luck. She's working at a psychic hotline, but can't seem to get into a groove. Her boyfriend has dumped her, she is scrounging for cash, and out of desperation, agrees to join a somewhat scientific Dating Experiment because it offers cash and maybe will help her get out of a rut. Things couldn't get much worse, right? Until the invitations to date her go out to all her social media contacts, and she reconnects with the one man she loved, but let go. Yeah, things definitely got worse and fast!

Ian McConnell has come home to get married, but things are complicated. To top it off, every time he's around Gabby Malone, his life is upended a little bit more. She's always been a constant in his life, but now that they're adults, everything is different. Watching her muddle through a Dating Experiment has showed him the heart he always knew she had underneath it all, but can he take a chance with her before it's too late?

This book has it all, love, laughter, and even some tears. Ms. Strain takes an ordinary girl that everyone can relate to and puts her in extraordinary dating situations that will make you laugh and be grateful your own dates weren't so awful!

Beyond the humor, though, there is an underlying theme of "find what matters." There's a younger character in the book who is struggling with some very difficult circumstances, but is making the best of it by promoting GLAs (Good Little Anythings) to remind everyone of what really matters. There are inspiring moments that will make you cry, they are so sweet, and made me want to start my little journal of my GLAs!

One of the other highlights of the book was the romance. Ms. Strain gives our hero and heroine an intriguing back story and combines it with complicated circumstances that kept me up reading to make sure they got their happily-ever-after. This is definitely one book you won't want to miss, especially if you love romantic comedy!

The Dating Experiment is one of my favorite books so far this year and one of Elodia Strain's best work.  Go grab your copy!

Here's the back copy:

After losing her job, her house, and her guy, the last thing Gabby wants to do is be in a dating experiment—especially with her ex. Her only chance of making it through is with help from her best friend, Ian. But as the study and all its hilariously awkward dates goes on, Gabby finds herself wondering what exactly this experiment is all about.

Guest Blogger Review And TWO Giveaways!

I am so excited to have my oldest daughter, Lauren, guest reviewing today. She is reviewing Hank Smith's book, Be Happy. Since she worked with him at EFY and took a class from him as well, she seemed the logical choice.

I am also reviewing a book today, Kristin Holt's new story, Sophia's Leap Year Courtship, so be sure to scroll all the way down to read my book review AND enter both giveaways!

Lauren's Review:

I recently finished the book Be Happy by Hank Smith, and no surprise, I give it a similar review to how I would feel about all Hank Smith works. I absolutely loved it! But this one was different for me. Let me explain.

Last week, I came home from teaching school after a terrible and very long day. I was feeling extremely grumpy and, like the sometimes-sassy second graders I deal with, I definitely needed a nap. But before I could escape peacefully to my room, some words were had with a family member and I marched upstairs, grabbed a chocolate bar (just like my mom, am I right??) and plopped down to feel sorry for myself. Just then, I glanced over to see the book I was supposed to be reading and hadn’t even opened yet. “OH GOOD,” I thought a little sarcastically, “I’m in a rotten mood and am having a rotten day. Teach me to be happy, Brother Smith.” And do you know what? He did.

I was expecting a book about smiling more, laughing, service and maybe even a bit about a gratitude journal, which is exactly what I got. But oh no, it didn’t stop there. In addition there were many other ways to be happy that are backed by science and studies (who knew Hank Smith was so versed in psychology?), a deep look into the scriptures, quotes from general authorities and other famous figures masterfully woven in, history lessons, and a deeper understanding of what the Lord is telling us when He says “men are that they might have joy.”

If you know Hank Smith, you know that he is a master storyteller and that definitely shines through in this book. From personal experiences, including his baby touring the house story that still gets me every time I hear it, to an interesting look at the life of Thomas Edison that I had never thought of before, the stories he chose to represent his concepts of positivity are perfect for what he is trying to accomplish. I also enjoyed that he took a chapter to address depression, because so many people struggle with it, and the rest of us can’t understand and sometimes don’t know what to say. I appreciated his insight and feel more equipped to help those around me.

My absolute, hands down, favorite part of the book was his section on patience. If you look back to the first paragraph, I clearly don’t have enough and sometimes the second graders reeeallllyyyy bring that out of me (I really do love them. Even when they ask me why I’m so tall and why I smell like bread pudding. They’re the best.) Hank Smith brings up some good ideas to increase your patience and understand its importance, and by doing so VOILA! more happiness! But what was most relevant to me in the book was being patient with the Lord. Smith writes, “..Allow the Lord to do his work in His due time. Because that kind of patience is also directly hardwired into happiness. Why? Because the Lord knows what He’s doing, and we don’t know his mind or purposes. But remember? He told us our purpose is to have joy.” Sometimes, we forget not only to be patient and happy with others, but with ourselves and the Lord as well. This book is perfect for people of all ages, the stories will make you laugh, cry and want to be better, and you will never look at the microwaves at Home Depot the same way again.

Here's the back copy:

Julie's Review:

Kristin Holt is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I love how she can draw me into a story and time period and make me feel like I am right there. This story was no different! (Also, it's part of the Timeless Romance Singles so it's just over a hundred pages long. Perfect for the days when I need an escape, but don't have a lot of time!)

Chadwick Hughes has sent away for a mail order bride after more than a year of letters and long-distance courtship between them. He's built a house for her and is excited to finally be married. Unfortunately, his bride doesn't come because she never existed. He's been duped. His close friend advises him to hire the town's only female lawyer to look into the matter for him. And that's when the worst point of his life becomes the best.

Sophia has sent away for a husband, one who can accept a wife who earns a wage. She hasn't been accepted anywhere, and has a newspaperman who humiliates her at every turn. Perhaps even a loveless marriage would stop the gossip and help her maintain some semblance of dignity. When she gets her first client in Chadwick Hughes, she's determined to do her best work. But events soon show her that there's more to Chadwick than she imagined and perhaps they can help each other.

I loved the sparks between Chadwick and Sophia. Even though this is a shorter story, I loved how easily the characters interacted and their romance was a slow burn. The obstacles between them were realistic and relatable and as a reader, I was turning pages long after I should have put it down to see how it all turned out! The Wyoming setting was perfect and easy to imagine from the descriptions. I also enjoyed seeing women in unusual careers, especially at this point and time when women were scorned for being anything other than a homemaker. The readers also get a peek into the lives of Joe and Naomi from a previous story, which was a treat as well. This was a satisfying love story that had me smiling at the end. I think historical romance fans will love this one!

Here's the back copy:

Union Pacific Station Agent Chadwick Hughes has everything in a state of readiness to welcome his mail order bride…everything but the bride. The woman he’s corresponded with for a year didn’t change her mind or miss her train in Omaha—she never existed. Chadwick’s mortified to discover he’s been swindled by a fraudulent matrimonial agency in Chicago. He needs a lawyer if he’ll ever recover a dime of the fortune he spent on worthless membership fees and the nonexistent bride’s transportation west.

Sophia Sorensen, Attorney at Law, is a spinster on the edge of propriety. The good people of Wyoming Territory are open to a lot of things, including Lady’s Privilege during Leap Years, but some aren’t fond of her day-to-day behavior. Why, the woman rides her bicycle hither and yon, showing her petticoat ruffle and ankles. She might be the least ladylike specimen beneath Wyoming skies, but it’s entertaining to watch her court the U.P. Station Agent, Chadwick Hughes, the most-eligible bachelor in the county.
