Hawaii Five-- Recap and Review: The One With the Frozen Guy

We start out with Grover on a golf course at a swanky resort where he's applied to be a member, but his application is stuck at the bottom of the pile. The head of security comes and asks him for help. Seems they have a frozen body in the cryo-chamber and want to keep it quiet. Since there are dents on the inside of the door, bruises on the victim's hands showing he was trying to bang his way out, and the outside of the door has indentations that indicate someone barred the door shut, he was murdered.

Cue music.

Danny and Steve are at Charlie's school for a meeting about Charlie, chatting about how they haven't heard anything about Mrs. Wo Fat or Adam. The school official comes in and since Charlie's mom can't come, Danny introduces Steve as basically Charlie's uncle. Steve adds that he's Danny's emotional support friend. Poor Charlie is being bullied at school by a kid named Blake and they wanted to have a convo with both sets of parents, but the bully's parents won't come in. Danny says he'll handle it and leaves. (Well, that didn't go well.)

Tani is at HQ listening to a voicemail from Junior that he's been called up for reserve duty and doesn't know how long he'll be gone, but he'll call as soon as he can and is looking forward to picking up where they left off. Tani goes into the office area and it's empty. She calls Lou to find out where everyone is, but he's busy with the frozen guy case. He asks her to run financials and phone records on poor, frozen Chuck who was there for his cryo therapy session before his killer locked him in and maxed out the timer. The guy got a -200 degree chilling blast of evaporating liquid nitrogen for ten minutes. All Lou wanted to do was play golf, and now he's looking into the 167 people signed in at Chuck's time of death. Poor Lou.

Adam is in a Tokyo alley waiting for a woman to come out of a bar. He asks her to get him a meeting with the head of the Tokyo syndicate. She doesn't want to, especially with his law enforcement history, but he tells her he gave that up and throws down the "do it out of respect for my father" card. She says she'll ask, but that's all. He says that's all he needs and the woman warns him that Kenji has many loyal men here in Tokyo, so be careful.

Lou looks in FrozenChuck's locker and finds a wad of cash and a hole in his pants pocket---which he used when he lost a golf ball on the course, then he could drop one down pant leg for a better spot. He also has a print out of old golf scores from Phoenix of one Raoul Diaz.

Steve is driving while Danny is looking at a tracker on his phone, angry that his son has been tormented for weeks. Steve tells him he was bullied in military school, but the experience made him strong mentally. He cautions Danny to know the whole situation before he goes off half-cocked because there's always a reason why a kid bullies. He asks if he's sure he wants to do this and Danny yells at him to just do it and they pull over BlaketheBully's father.

Lou finds out that golf pro in Phoenix is now a member of the club in Hawaii and happens to be there golfing right now! Only he's going by the name Ed Ramirez now. They go to question him about Chuck's murder. Apparently, Chuck was losing money to Raoul when he found out he's a pro hustling people in the clubs, and could have exposed him. But Raoul has an alibi, so no go, there. Raoul does say that Chuck had a serious problem with gambling, but always settled his debts in cash at the end of the night, sometimes to the tune of 50K a day! Since there wasn't anything like that in his financials, where was he getting the cash from?

BlaketheBully's dad thinks they're being a bit extreme to pull him over and take him to a little wooded area. Danny is all, your son's behavior is extreme, you didn't show up at the school, do you think the rules don't apply to you? Steve tries to de-escalate things and says they just want to find out what's gong on with Charlie and Blake. Dad says things are stressful because they're going through a divorce and he had an appointment with his attorneys. It's been toxic and he's trying to keep Blake out of it, but he'll talk to him about Charlie. Danny understands what he's going through and they shake hands. Steve thinks that since the adults figured it out, the kids can do the same thing.

They think Chuck kept his cash in his whiskey locker, but Lou has to put on a member's jacket to be allowed in since there's a dress code. He takes a selfie and is pleased to see how it looks on him. They open the whiskey box and it's full of cash. Since Chuck had high volume cash businesses, they need to look into those. HPD is on the case and they find a hidden stash behind his bookcase totalling about $120 million. CSU is on the job and already found duplicate patterns in numerical sequences so the bills are counterfeit. Lou thinks Chuck was money laundering for a counterfeit ring, but gambled himself into a hole and started skimming, so when the guy he was working for realized what was happening, he killed him.

The Secret Service could tell from the ink on the counterfeit cash that it was generated in North Korea and those bills are showing up worldwide. Since North Korea's trade embargo is so severe most of the exports are being routed through China, so they need to find the China connection. The club's head of security, Zeb, has made a visual of papers on his office wall to understand Chuck's businesses. Now they can look for where the bills could have shipped out of ports in China. When they looked at the well-known businesses of other club members who have some financial indiscretions, they find Michael Mayfield. He has an import/export company out of Shanghai and nine months ago, Mr. Mayfield and Chuck starting signing up for joint tee times three or four times a month. That's the same time frame that Chuck saw a distinct uptick in income for his businesses. Mayfield is coming in for an 8:45 tee time, so Zeb calls for him to come to the office. No one wants to make a scene, after all.

Adam is being followed in a marketplace by some goons. He tries to run, but they finally corner him and put a hood over his head.

Lou and Zeb are waiting for Mayfield to come in, and when he does, Lou realizes he met him on the first tee, but he gave a different name. When he shows up and Lou flashes his badge, the guy runs. Lou chases him in the golf cart and Zeb runs after him on foot. Mayfield is a slow runner, so he steals a golf cart, but Lou rams him. Mayfield keeps running and Zeb has some sprinklers turned on to slow him down until Zeb can catch him. There's a little fistfight, but Mayfield is finally cuffed. Mayfield still has the three iron he used to bar the door so Chuck couldn't get out in his possession, so he gets taken away.

Back at McG's house they are having beers with Blake's dad while Eddie plays with the boys. It's a really cute scene. Blake's dad talks about how hard it is to realize the family is broken up and he's partially responsible. Danny relates and tells him that divorce is a trauma that you have to heal, but he will and he can still be a good dad. His advice is to never disrespect the ex in front of the kid. They offer to hang out with him sometime and Blake's dad is grateful they gave Blake a chance to apologize. Tani shows up for human interaction and Steve tells her that if she ever needs to talk, just call him.

Grover is on a community golf course with Zeb and has turned down the fancy club membership. He liked the club, but not the people so much. He also found out he really was at the bottom of the wait list and they were fast-tracking high income clients for membership, so that was clarifying. They're just two guys enjoying the weather and playing a round of gold, which is what it's all about. They make a bet that the winner buys drinks. (I like Zeb. I know it's a long shot, but I hope we see him again.)

They finally take off Adam's hood and he's facing the head of the Tokyo syndicate. The only reason he's here is out of respect for his father, for which Adam is grateful. He tattles that Kenji killed Masuda and brought dishonor to his clan and the entire organization. Don't trust him! The Big Guy says it was a big risk to come here with such accusations, are you better fit to lead? Adam says he already has support of a number of the brothers, but will only proceed with the Big Guy's blessing. The Big Guy asks him if he's sure this is what he wants and Adam pontificates that he's here because the blood of Hiro Noshimuri runs in his veins and he's been trying to run from his destiny, but this is his birthright. The Big Guy isn't quite convinced, but will allow it if Adam can prove his loyalty by returning to Five-0 and being his eyes and ears inside the task force. He also assures Adam that Kenji will not pose any threat to him if he does what he says. So, he asks Adam, how badly do you want to fulfill your destiny? To whom are you loyal? Adam looks stricken, and that's where we end!

Kind of a filler episode for me, with Adam being the highlight. What did you think? Did you watch?
