It's Almost My Birthday And I'm Getting Old

So it’s my birthday this week and I’ve been thinking about how wonderful this past year has been.

In the past year two amazing things happened.

1. I had a baby who is the happiest baby I’ve ever had. He just always has a smile on his face. He is such a joy and I’m so lucky to have him.

2. I put out a new novel. It was a labor of love on that one and I’m so glad it’s doing so well, even if it didn’t have a particularly smooth road to publication.

In the past year I’ve learned a few things, too.

1. I learned that all my precious 80s music is now on the oldies station. To tell you the truth, it was a shock when I turned to the oldies station and found a song I liked. Then they played another song I liked, then another, and then I knew I was in trouble. Oldies station, people. OLDIES!

2. I learned that I am totally going for comfort with my clothing these days, rather than looks. A woman came into the bookstore where I was signing books last Saturday and she was wearing pajama pants and some moccasin-looking slippers and I was jealous.

3. I learned that some of my best days are when I’m in a brain fog because I had to get up early with toddlers after a late night of staying up waiting for teenagers to come home from dates. Why are those my best days? Because then I don’t care if I am still in my pajamas and listening to the oldies station. I can just feel good about it!

So, on my birthday, I am going to be grateful to see another year, for my health, a great family, and the opportunities to do what I love to do. Pass me the fuzzy slippers, some Def Leppard tunes, and a computer screen with my work-in-progress on it and I’m a happy girl. Oh, and I won’t forget the chocolate. What birthday would be complete without that?

Okay, that IS weird to think of eighties music as "oldies." Aren't oldies from the 50s and 60s? :)

Happy birthday this week!

I know, right? I was still in that thought mode myself. Thanks for the birthday wishes! :)

That is so funny you brought up 80s music. My husband and I were just at the mall and we heard them playing 80's music. My husband pointed out that music from our childhood is so good that they're still playing it. But now I'm thinking it's turned into elevator music. lol

(How do they say it in Canada?) Happy Birthday, eh?

Mine was last week. In the past year, I've managed to help produce two baby boys and lose all of my free time. My wife got me a game system as a present and it feels a little like a gag gift. Like, ha ha, when are you going to get a chance to play this?

I hear you on the 80's "classic rock". It's just not right. Maybe the people 10 years older than us have a problem with what I'd call classic rock (Yes, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd)

I tell you, I'm listening to a top 100 list this week from Billboard, and it's almost all crap. It's pretty sad when the best sounding modern music is Country Music (something I've never really appreciated.) Oh, and Adele is awesome, too.

Happy Birthday, Julie. You are such an overachiever--a baby and a novel in the same year.

Happy birthday, Julie.

Yeah, 80's music is old. My husband has his iPod filled with his favorite 80's songs/artists, which we have to listen to every road trip. I've recently put my foot down and demanded equal listening time for my favorite- country music. :)

Tip: lambs wool lined moccasins are very comfy and almost look like regular foot ware.

Happy Birthday for this week Julie. I hear you on the 80's music - and the comfy clothes :-)

The day I heard Def Leppard on the Easy Listening Station was the day I decided I was old. Welcome to the club!

Happy Birthday, although my youngest is turning 12 on friday and is convinced this whole week is hers.
Def Leppard on easy listening, that is sooo wrong on so many levels!

Happy Birthday, whenever it is!

You know what's really weird? When I was in high school, I liked modern music (80's music) but I also liked listening to the oldies from the 50's and 60's. I still do. But now my local oldies station doesn't play music from the 50's and 60's anymore -- those songs are too old! Now it's music from the 70's and 80's that are the oldies! Did I say, weird? I meant scary!

But there's one thing that never gets old, especially not in my house, and that's chocolate. Here's hoping that you get something from your very favourite brand on your birthday, and also otherwise have a great day!

Janice, it's such a sad state of affairs!

Jon, your gag gift made me laugh! Seriously, when do we have time for much of anything with babies around. :)

Thanks for the birthday wishes Jennie, Rebecca, Debra, and Sarah.

Brittany, thanks for the welcome. I'm glad I'm not the only one in the club!

Bridget I totally agree.

Melanie, thank you! I will.
